Why BBM?

With the recent announcement that BBM will be going cross-platform, I am sure some of you guys who have never used BBM will be wondering why you should even download BBM for your Android or iOS smartphone. So today, I am going to try and explain why.

——-

Background:

I was kind of an early adopter for the first iPhone 3G that arrived in Singapore. I got WhatsApp when it was first released for free on iOS. It was a nifty little app since I can simply use data instead of the exorbitant SMS fees (especially to overseas).

I only got my first BlackBerry, a Bold 9000 more than 2-3 years after that. My first impression of BBM was that it was too restrictive, since I can only chat with people also on BlackBerry. I hardly use it initially. After adding a few friends on BBM, and chatting with them every now and then, I have no doubt in my mind that BBM is vastly superior both in terms of features, and experience compared to WhatsApp. With new features on BBM for BB10, the differences are just Heaven and Hell. I found myself loving BBM. Something I never could with WhatsApp or any other IM clients.

——-

Let me start with the basic features, messaging and groups. Both of which will be on iOS and Android first, before other features are added.

Messaging:

BBM messages are routed through BlackBerry’s servers, and are “scrambled” in a sense. To keep it simple, it is more secure than your typical SMS or WhatsApp. If we assume the same for iOS and Android devices, that is one advantage here.

When the message has been read by your recipient, the “D” (delivered), turns into a “R” (Read), on your device. This means that you will always know if your message has reached your desired recipient. Compared to WhatsApp, where you can only see if the message has been sent out to the recipient’s device, but not if they have read it. This translate to a more reliable delivery of messages. It is nice to know if your messages has been read or not.

The down side of course is that you can no longer use the excuse that you have missed the message, or “did not see it”. lol. (You still can ignore the notification though as long as you don’t go into that chat.)

There is an “Updates” tab in BBM as well, which includes the latest updates (status, changing profile pictures, posts, etc) from your contacts, and BBM Channels. Which is super useful for a quick updates from everyone, kind of like a newsfeed.

Groups:

Here comes the good part, “Groups”. If you look at the middle image above, that is a Group I have created with my sister, who is on BBM as well. You can see that it is separated into 4 sections. Chats, Pictures, Lists, and Events.

- ”Chats” are pretty self-explanatory, you can have a direct chat with any of the member easily as well.

- The “Pictures” frame contains all the images that you have shared within the group, with the latest shared image displayed on that frame. A quick way to view all previous images. Of course just like a normal chat which by default resizes the image to save data, if you want to get a Full resolution image, the recipient can send a “request” for it.

- With “Lists”, I can create a shopping list for a party for example, and all members can contribute to that list. Adding new items, or checking off items that have been bought already, so that no one else buys it again.

- With “Calendars”, I can create an event like “Mom’s Birthday” for example, and every member’s calendar will be updated with it. This is great for planning meetings, outings, etc.

BBM Groups is simply a much better experience than WhatsApp Group chat. It is a great tool that one can use to organise events, group projects, group discussions, etc. Something I have always found a PITA to do on WhatsApp.

——-

Now, we move on to the bells and whistles. Voice Chats, Video Chats, and Screen Sharing (ability to share what’s on your screen while in a video chat). While the initial version of BBM that will be release on iOS and Android will not have these features, BlackBerry have said that these will come eventually. Feature parity will eventually come.

I can assure you that Voice, Video and Screen Share all works wonderfully. I was unable to attend a recent media event for the BlackBerry Q10 in Singapore. So I used Video Chat with a friend that was there, and live streamed the event.

There was no lag or sluggishness. Both video and audio were remarkably clear, even with my friend only on cellular network (better than on Skype imo). Even while I was receiving high resolution images (each 1+mb) in our BBM chat, the video was smooth. After the presentation my friend even passed his phone to a few representatives there so I could ask them questions.

Why have a few apps to obtain these features when all you need is BBM?

—-

Now, the icing on the cake. BBM Channels.

As summarised by CrackBerry, "BBM Channels allows users to create channels for themselves, a brand, business or community and extend their social networking through BBM. You have the ability to create and share posts that can be shared with all of your channel subscribers."

It is currently in beta, and I have been using it for a couple of days only. I am following a bunch of Channels as well as maintaining my own channel. So far, first impressions are really good. It is still pretty bare bones since it is only a beta, but I am sure there will be more features added eventually.

My description would be a “Mobile First” micro blogging platform that is most similar to Tumblr, but combines the experience of twitter, Instagram, and Facebook as well. Add that with a BBM twist, since on each post, there is a “R” logo that will show how many have read that post. Kind of like how you have the “R” logo for Read in normal BBM chats.

I can create posts with an image, a title, and a message with 400 characters limit (which feels like a sweet spot between being too vague like twitter, or too long winded like this post that you are reading). In the previous paragraph I mentioned “Mobile First” because BBM Channels feels like it was made for mobile devices first and foremost. It is so easy to create a new post, share it with your subscribers, and read posts by others. In just 3 days, I already have 12 posts in my Channel. (Which you can follow by scanning the code below if you are on Channels as well.) :D

Since it is also tied into BBM, you can have direct conversations with your subscribers as well without needing to add them. The response you get from posts (if you are a well known brand, celebrity, etc) is also pretty amazing. Take CrackBerry, they did a test by creating a post on a live stream, and immediately there were a bunch of comments and likes almost instantly.

Another post they did just a few days ago asking “Z10 or Q10?”, has gotten more than 600 comments and 300 likes. Keep in mind BBM Channels is still in Beta, on BlackBerry only, and requires some work to acquire. The response is pretty amazing.

It still requires some work, and more features, but I seriously think it has lots of potential. Especially once BBM goes cross-platform.

—-

Lastly, the foundations.

BBM is a very reliable platform. Yes, they have their occasional outages, but those are far and a few. Especially when comparing to iMessage and WhatsApp. If you send a BBM, you KNOW that the message will arrive at its destination. With iMessage, its still a hit or miss. Quoting a tweet from Peter Cohen, one of the editor for iMore.com (Apple news/fan site):

Next, BBM is lovable. I am sure some of you might have heard the term BBM addict before. People who cannot live without BBM (to the extent of having a second phone just for BBM even after switching to another platform). But have you ever heard WhatsApp addict? I know I haven’t. People use WhatsApp because it works well enough for their needs. Their friends are all using it. But are people addicted to WhatsApp? Hell no.

According to a Press Release by BlackBerry,

BBM has more than 60 million monthly active customers, with more than 51 million people using BBM an average of 90 minutes per day. BBM customers collectively send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps. Almost half of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds of being received; indicating how truly engaged BBM customers are.

I certainly know that is true for me. I tend to talk/respond to people on BBM more so than people on WhatsApp (now you know why I often take some time to reply WhatsApp messages, lol). BBM is a great messaging experience, the best in fact.

Comparing to WhatsApp, with latest reports from last month, has more than 200 million active users, processing 20 billion messages every day. It is a huge number, but keep in mind that BBM is only available on BlackBerry, while WhatsApp is on all major platforms (including even symbian). This works out to an average of around 100 messages per active user per day, compared to the average of 166 messages for BBM. Which might be an indication that people enjoy using BBM, thus spend more time chatting on it compared to WhatsApp.

——-

Now, I am not saying WhatsApp is a terrible app, it works well enough. But that is exactly it, it just manages to work well enough. Whereas BBM is as brilliant as they get.

If you have managed to read this far, all I am asking is to give it a shot when it launches. Ask your friends to give it a shot too, so you have more BBM contacts to chat with. Why settle for just good enough when you can have the best?

6. Menyediakan hormon dan vitamin bagi tanaman
7. Menekan pertumbuhan/serangan penyakit tanaman
8. Meningkatkan retensi/ketersediaan hara di dalam tanah

C. Dasar-Dasar Pengomposan
1. Bahan-bahan yang Dapat Dikomposkan Pada dasarnya semua bahan-bahan organik padat dapat dikomposkan, misalnya : limbah organik rumah tangga, sampah-sampah organik pasar/kota, kertas, kotoran/limbah peternakan, limbah-limbah pertanian, limbah-limbah agroindustri, limbah pabrik kertas, limbah pabrik gula, limbah pabrik kelapa sawit, dll.

BlackBerry Live Screenshots Recap

BlackBerry Live officially kicked off yesterday at 9PM local time. Lots of exciting news was revealed, and I am still trying to get my head around most of them. The headaches and cold I am having are certainly not helping. So I am just going to do a quick recap based on the screenshots I captured.

Opening keynote by Thorsten Heins. Talked about his thoughts and feeling over the past year, and getting BB10 to market.

Introducing C-Level guys at BlackBerry.

What the media/consumers have been saying about BB10.

Introducing the mid level BB10 device the Q5.

Available in Pink, Red, Black, and White. Hot. Hoping for more colours.

Thorsten talking about Mobile, and BlackBerry knows Mobile.

Talking apps. A new milestone. 120,000 apps in BB World for BB10.

Some BB10 apps that are coming.

Talking about BB10 as a Mobile Platform, not just a Smartphone OS.

BB10/QNX in automotive. Showing off a BBM video call in the car. Too awesome. Lots of potential here. QNX is already being used by a lot of car manufacturers, so the potential is huge here. A list of those I know; BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Acura, Chrysler, Daewoo, General Motors, Hyundai, land rover, Porsche, and Saab (well… lol).

Talking BES 10.1. In a nutshell, one server to rule them all. Also talking about the advantages of deploying BES. Not going to go further on this even though lots have been said, as this doesn’t exactly applies to normal consumers. It is no doubt extremely important, but I am just too wiped to go through them again.

Talking Marketing. Unifying the brand, no more RIM, Bold, Curve, etc. BlackBerry will be the main brand that will be marketed strongly.

Some other initiatives was mentioned, but this particularly one interest me the most since I have recently joined the Elite program that just started in Singapore. (Thanks to BlackBerry SG for that!)

Lewis Hamilton on stage. He also introduced the new BBM Channels that is now in beta. You can grab it now if you are on the Beta Zone. I have it and its pretty nice.

—-> Apologies for the lo-res shots here, I had to drive my cousin to see a doctor so I could only stream over my Z10. Well, at least I could. I tried to open the stream on an S3 and it doesn’t support the stream. In between the Marketing part and Lewis Hamilton, Alicia Keys did come on stage and talked about a scholarship program for women interested in tech. At least that’s what I can remember. I was driving at that point of time and could only listen in, so apologies again.

BBM Channels to me, is like Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, all rolled into a single package. Been using it for a few hours, and its pretty great. It feels like what a Mobile focused blogging/social network platform would be. I will try to have another post on this if possible to explore more of it. Nonetheless, my thoughts about it are really positive thus far.

Final and biggest announcement to me at the end. BBM going cross-platform. It will be available in the summer for iOS 6.0, and Android ICS and up. No love for Windows phone though. The app will launch with basic messaging and group chat features. With feature parity planned, such as Video chat, voice chat, and screen sharing.

——-

This is too huge to not comment about it. There have been a heated debate for a while whether BBM should go cross platform long before this announcement, both sides having valid points. My take?

Bravery. Its a risky move no doubt. Huge risks. People who used a BlackBerry just to use BBM can now switch away without missing BBM. But there are also potential for consumers to be impressed with the app and show BlackBerry in a different light. Provided the app is rock solid. Double edged sword if you ask me. More thoughts here if you aren’t asleep by now. lol.

——-

Well, that’s about it for BB Live. Apologies for the really really long post. But there was just so much news, and frankly I already skipped a lot of them (not to mention the Jam keynote afterwards). Anyway, here’s a quick recap of BB Live Day 1.

Thoughts on BBM

Here’s the latest updates regarding BBM, its going cross platform, and there is a new service called BBM Channels. If you do not know about that yet, go read the links. Now the other question that I have, is that would BBM work cross platform?

I think convincing iOS and Android users onto BBM will be key. Which I think will be down to BlackBerry users convincing their friends to give it a shot, and to publicise when it is released. If anyone has used a BB before and used BBM, they will know how reliable it is. It has its downtime occasionally, but generally I still find it far more reliable than iMessage and WhatsApp, at least for me.

Security is another as these BBM messages will presumably still go through BB’s servers, meaning encryption, etc. These users will be easier to convince. But the problem is still those who have never used BBM extensively before and think its just another IM client.

WIth BB10, it now has video chat, voice calls, screen sharing. Group chats on BB10 is fantastic as well. A much better experience than on whatsapp. It is especially useful for project collaboration. Where a lot of images, ideas, etc are thrown around. Whatsapp are just too messy for these.

Providing these features for users of other platforms will be a great chance to showcase what BlackBerry is capable of. Having used plenty of IM clients myself on various platforms, BBM is still the yardstick for what a great IM client should be. Especially now with the new features, and BBM Channels.

Not to mention, the more friends you have on BBM the better your experience will be. I am not being a fanboy here by saying this, but BBM makes WhatsApp look like crap. This is coming from a guy that jumped onto iOS very early on, a guy that used WhatsApp since it was first launched on iOS. Honestly, when I got my first BlackBerry, and chatted with a few friends over BBM for a couple of days, I was BLOWN AWAY. iMessage isn’t even on the same page.

Here a great BBM stat for you, “Over 50% of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds.” That is how addictive and great BBM is.

—-

Here’s a real life scenario. At the recent Q10 media preview, I couldn’t make it there. A friend BBM video called me, live streamed the event to me. He even passed the phone to a few reps so I could ask them some question. Video and Audio quality was great, far better than I have ever seen on Skype.

—-

Furthermore, they demoed a Bentley running BB10/QNX making a BBM video call. Meaning BBM might play a bigger role in the future IF car manufacturers upgrade their infotainment systems to BB10. Which should be quite likely since a lot of companies are already running QNX on their cars. So it shouldn’t be hard to imagine them running customised versions of BB10 to suit their needs on cars with the basic services of BB10 still inside. So there is more possibilities there as well, so for that to work with iOS and Android would be great too.

BBM as a platform on its own has loads of potential. Potential that I think is worth the risks. In case you have not noticed, I am in favour of the idea, and I really think that this will work out well.

I apologies if I come across as a little incoherent. The headache is killing me.

Let's Get Physical... again

More than a year ago, I wrote an article titled “Let’s Get Physical”, talking about how there is still a place for Physical Keyboards on a smartphone. More than a year has passed, and virtual keyboard technology has improved by leaps and bounds. BlackBerry 10 is now in the hands of consumers, and the first BlackBerry 10 device with a physical QWERTY keyboard will soon be release in Singapore. So, I thought this would a good time to revisit that topic. Is having a physical keyboard still worth sacrificing the screen size?

Let’s talk about its counterpart first, Virtual Keyboards. In the past few years, prediction engine for Virtual Keyboards has gotten a whole lot smarter at guessing what we are trying to type.

Take the BlackBerry Z10’s keyboard for example. The keyboard uses smart mapping to detect where you would normally hit when typing, and adjusts accordingly. If the keyboard detects that you often tap the “w” key when you want to hit the “q” key, the software adjusts the touch area ever so slightly to move the “q” button to the right so that you hit the right button. The keyboard can also learn from they way you have been typing, from twitter, Facebook, emails, SMS, etc. So it can better predict what you want to type. The way to select predicted words is brilliant too, and instead of moving your thumbs above the keyboard to select the words you want, the predictions show up on the frets on the keyboard and you just flick up the next word. This saves loads of time especially when trying to type in long and complicated words.

Then there are gestures. Swipe down to get to symbols, swipe back with one finger to delete a previous word, two fingers to delete two words, and three fingers to delete 3 words. Honestly, I believe BlackBerry 10 to have the best virtual keyboard today, even when compared to SwiftKey or Swype.

I am no stranger to touch screen keyboards as I was on iOS for a couple of years prior to switching to a BlackBerry. Eventually I had a couple of devices from other platforms as well. A couple of Nokia Lumia devices, and a couple of Android devices as well. To say I am faster on a virtual keyboard compared to a physical keyboard would probably be an understatement. Especially on the Z10’s awesome virtual keyboard, which I can absolutely fly.

So then why am I even talking about Physical Keyboards if virtual keyboard these days are so good? Why the hell would I consider sacrificing the bigger screen on the Z10 and switch to the Q10?

Here are a few reasons for me:

1. Accuracy - Physical keyboards are still more accurate. Period. Predictive input might be fantastic these days, but without a key that you can actually feel, you need to look before you can tap on the letter you want. With a physical button, you build muscle memory over time. Long time BlackBerry users will know this, that our thumbs seems to intuitively know where to go to find the letter we want.

There are still many instances where predictive input doesn’t play that important a role. Such as website addresses, passwords, and universal search. This is where a physical keyboard really helps. With the new 10.1 OS, there is a new Instant Action feature, which basically extends universal search to allow actions. If you want to post a quick tweet using the “tw” action, keep in mind that predictive input does not work for search, so having an accurate keyboard comes into play again.

2. Keyboard Shortcuts - No matter what, I think no one can argue that pressing the “T” key to go to the top of a webpage is much easier than continuously scrolling up. Especially on an extremely long page, or perhaps a better example would be an email inbox when you receive a lot of emails daily. Then there is the space bar which you can use to scroll down a page, which is definitely easier then a swiping action. If I am reading a long article, I can keep my thumb on the space bar, then just keep scrolling without ever needing to move my thumb a millimeter.

Also for heavy communicators with tons of notifications daily, its easier to use the “U” key to go the the next unread message, or simply pressing the “del” key to delete an item. And there are plenty of keys for developers to utilize and create shortcuts to make app navigation a lot easier.

3. Tactility - Well, this is a highly personal preference, but somehow there is a gratifying feeling typing on a physical keyboard that is not there on virtual keyboards for me. Typing becomes an actual enjoyable experience rather than a necessity. Though I may not be able to type as fast, I find that with a physical keyboard, the enjoyable typing experience actually makes me want to type longer.

All in all, I shall wait until I have at least used it for a week or two before deciding which is the better device for me. But I have a feeling that it is going to be the Q10. There are of course other things to consider, such as form factor and size as well, which I like on the Q10.

So… anyone else can’t wait for the Q10 to be released in Singapore?
